Oh what a night...

Many of you are aware I am a labor and delivery nurse.  I have been in this profession for over sixteen years now...except for my brief hiatus as an Assisted Living Director and then Home Health Nurse.  I missed the cries of a new baby...and had to return!  The majority of my days are amazing.  Last night however, I had the worst patient I've ever had in 16 years.  Not sure if it was actually the patient or the patients mother...but let me just say...OMG!  NEVER in 16 years have I refused to care for a patient.  But last night...last night was the first.  I know this poor girl was terrified, and can you believe...she didn't know labor would hurt!  Yea...I know...anyone that's given birth knows "hurt" doesn't even BEGIN to explain what you feel!  I have dealt with crazy, I have dealt with ignorant, I have dealt with mean, and selfish, and you name it.  Last night...was a first though.  As the supervisor put it...I bet you feel like your working ghetto...I reminded her I DID work ghetto..and I'd take ghetto over her anyday!!!

Friends..just say a prayer for this girl and her family.  And the little life that's probably by now entered into it.  It was very obvious there was one heck of an unusual family dynamic here...and it's one of those situations where most would say I dont know how you do it.  Unfortunately after this many years...you really can only do one thing...and that's what I've done...ask for prayer.  Because that is THE option!  And if you wouldn't mind...put a little bleep in there for me too...to help me remember that it's really not "me" but whatever ghosts haunted this family!

  4. Disturbingly strange......just when you thought you've seen it all. I cry for babies born to people like them. Sometimes life isn't very fair. Poor girl, I can only imagine what she has to deal with. You did the right thing. Everyone has their limits....I am praying you can find peace and that you won't let this haunt you too. -Steph-

  5. Holy Moly this must have been one horrible patient for 'anyone' to refuse to help.
Praying you can get beyond all of that and know that it's not all patients that get to you like this.....One in a Million....thanks goodness.

  6. Prayers and thoughts going your way. Just know that it is not your fault and sometimes you just have to do what is right for you. Prayers will be said for the other family too.
    Take Care.

  7. I am hoping she went home early and you didn't have to deal with them anymore. Sad thing is, it is probably history repeating itself. Poor baby. You are in a position to welcome new life into the world so often, and that is a blessing. I bet you are an awesome nurse, and I wouldn't let this one haunt me. Just give Kaden another hug.
